Showdown on the Prairie

Paxi rolls past Primero with huge first half

The Cotopaxi High School football team crushed nonleague foe Primero 59-25 on Oct. 18, setting up a showdown on Saturday afternoon against No. 6-ranked Prairie.

The Pirates, 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the A-6 South West League, scored all of their points in the first half against the host Bulldogs, who fell to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the South-Central League.

Cotopaxi played most of the second half with their freshmen and sophomores on the field.

Junior Collin Whipple scored three touchdowns, including one interception return for a score seconds into the game. Freshman Ty Coleman threw three touchdown passes.

Cotopaxi now travels to New Raymer (30 miles north of Fort Morgan) to take on the Mustangs. Last year, Prairie ventured to Cotopaxi and beat the Pirates 60-30, although Cotopaxi led 24-14 at halftime.

The 2 p.m. contest will go a long way to determine the postseason seeding for both teams. Based on the RPI standings, Cotopaxi is No. 13, while Prairie is No. 6. The top 16 teams in the RPI standings make the playoffs. This is the final regular season game for both teams.
