Paxi Knowledge Bowl Team headed to state

The Cotopaxi High School Knowledge Bowl Team will compete at the Colorado Knowledge Bowl 2020 State Tournament next month as the third-seeded team in the Class 1A field, it was announced this week.

The Pirates earned a state berth as an at-large team, having finished behind La Veta by two points at the Class 1A Region 2 event in Alamosa on Jan. 28.

The state tourney will be held March 16-17 at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

Cotopaxi will vie at state against the following 1A teams: Pikes Peak Christian, La Veta, Manzanola, Eads, Kiowa, Prairie, Stratton, Karval, Ouray, Genoa-Hugo and Springfield. The Pirates had the third best regional tally based on their written and oral scores.

Representing the Pirates will be Amelia Tonnesen, Noah Jamerson, Sage Laymon and Drayven Bowton. Kaytee Ferguson and Lydia Tonnesen will be alternates. Lou Collins is the team’s coach.

On Feb. 13, the Pirates’ varsity and JV took first place in the San Luis Valley League Meet at Adams State College in Alamosa. Amelia Tonnesen, Jamerson and Bowton represented the varsity. Laymon was not present. The JV team included Ferguson, Lydia Tonnesen and Amanda Fallas. Gary Jarvis was not present.
