Pirates beat Antonito, advance to regionals

The Cotopaxi High School volleyball team advanced to next weekend’s Class 1A Region A Tournament with its performance at the District 6 Tournament on Saturday at Sierra Grande High School.

The Pirates beat Antonito 3-0, but fell to Sangre de Cristo 3-1 and to La Veta 3-0. Sangre de Cristo, which beat La Veta 3-1, finished as the district champion. La Veta, which was unbeaten during the regular season, ended up second, while Cotopaxi placed third. The top three teams advanced to the regional tournament.

“Overall, the girls had a great day,” Pirates coach Tiffany Coleman said. “The first two matches score-wise [against Sangre and La Veta] don't really reflect this, but they worked hard and overcame some obstacles that they usually face when we go up against Sangre and LaVeta.”

The Pirates lost to Sangre de Cristo, 25-14, 25-20, 16-25 and 25-20. They fell to La Veta 25-17, 25-15 and 25-22. Against Antonito, Cotopaxi emerged with a victory, 25-21, 25-5 and 25-15.

Cotopaxi will play at the Region A Tournament against host Sangre de Cristo and Norwood from the Western Slope. The winner of each of the eight regional tournaments advance to the Class 1A State Tournament Nov. 14–16 at the Denver Coliseum.

The time and date of the Region A Tournament will be announced on Monday.
