Pirates eye rematches with La Veta, Sangre

The Cotopaxi High School volleyball team hosts Mountain Valley on Thursday, Oct 31st, in the first round of the District 6 Tournament. The match starts at 5:30 p.m.

The Pirates, 16-3 overall and 8-2 in the district standings, defeated the Indians, 9-6 and 5-5, on Sept. 29 by scores of 25-9, 25-13 and 25-20. The winner advances to Saturday’s semifinals and finals at Sierra Grande High School.

Should they beat Mountain Valley, the Pirates are expected to see top-ranked and undefeated La Veta and the district’s second-place team, Sangre de Cristo. Three of the four teams at the district tourney will advance to the regional tournament.

Cotopaxi used a pair of matches on Friday, Oct. 25, as a tune-up for the district tourney. The host Pirates defeated Manzanola, 25-16, 25-9 and 25-3; and Creede, 25-15, 25-22 and 25-17.

“I feel like it helped to play those two teams because they had some really good rallies against us,” Pirates coach Tiffany Coleman said. “Our biggest thing in one of those games was serving. We realized we missed a lot of serves, so one of biggest goals was to get our serves in.”
