Cotopaxi basketball teams start practice

The Cotopaxi High School girls and boys basketball teams started practice on Nov. 18, with their first games scheduled for Dec. 6 against Cripple Creek at the Cotopaxi Tournament.

The Pirate girls are coming off a 19-4 season. They qualified for the regional tournament where they lost in overtime to McClave.

“We have a good core group of returnees, with some young girls who are stepping up to replace the three we lost from last year’s team,” Cotopaxi coach Troy Thornton said. “It’s like I tell the girls, the season is a marathon not a sprint.”

There are 13 girls on the roster. The team played South Park in a scrimmage on Saturday.

The Cotopaxi boys finished last season 11-9 and were eliminated at the district tournament by Primero.

"I have seen a lot of energy in practice,” Cotopaxi first-year coach Matt Schwindt said. “The kids are working hard to get better, and our juniors and seniors are displaying maturity as leaders.

“In terms of conditioning, we are in better shape than we have been in years past for the start of the season.”

There are 14 players on the roster.

In addition to Cripple Creek, Moffat and South Park will play in the Cotopaxi Tournament.
